Water is Vital to Life

Progressio embarks on a range of projects aiming to contribute to the sustainable management water resources, guaranteeing quality, availability and fair access.

Human survival is dependent on water. According to the UNDP, like hunger “deprivation in access to water is a silent crisis experienced by the poor and tolerated by those with resources, the technology and the political power to end it”. Today more that 1.1 billion people lack safe drinking water and more than 2.6 billion people live without access to sanitation systems.

While access to clean water and sanitation are key to human development, without a third component, hygiene, we will not make substantial improvements in health and address the problem of water borne diseases. Hand washing and better hygiene in preparing and storing foods helps combat diarrhoea. Progressio Ireland is working with the Government to enhance prioritization on water in its budgets and policy making processes.
